The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has intensified its enforcement efforts against the illicit sale of harmful skincare products, particularly bleaching creams, in Kano State. The agency has confirmed the arrest of six individuals and the closure of several shops during a targeted operation at Sabon Gari Market, Kano.
This decisive action was prompted by a wave of public outcry and complaints lodged through various social media platforms. The Director-General of NAFDAC, in response to these concerns, issued a directive that led to a coordinated surveillance and enforcement campaign.
During a press briefing held on Tuesday in Kano, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Kasim Ibrahim, shed light on the details of the operation. He revealed that the agency had conducted undercover investigations, including mystery shopping, to verify the sale and composition of certain cosmetic products being marketed as spa and beauty treatments.
“Our surveillance and discreet operations revealed that several of these products were being distributed and used without proper regulation,” Ibrahim stated. “They were found to contain harmful substances not approved by NAFDAC, and were falsely presented as skin care solutions.”
Following a detailed analysis and coordinated action by NAFDAC’s Investigation and Enforcement Directorate, the operation led to the apprehension of six key suspects allegedly involved in the illegal trade. The team also sealed multiple shops identified as points of sale for the unauthorized and dangerous bleaching creams.
In addition, several cosmetic brands were found to be counterfeit or operating in violation of NAFDAC’s regulatory standards. These companies have also been shut down pending the outcome of further investigations and laboratory analysis of the confiscated products.
Mr. Ibrahim stressed the importance of public cooperation in curbing the circulation of such hazardous products. He urged citizens to report suspicious sales or production of unregistered goods and to remain vigilant against products that pose health risks.
“NAFDAC remains committed to protecting the health and safety of Nigerians,” he said. “We encourage the public to support our efforts by reporting any dubious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.”
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating harmful and unregulated substances from the market and maintaining the integrity of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products available to consumers across the country.
