Iran’s Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, announced today that he will be meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming days. This development comes in the wake of a recent US attack on an Iranian nuclear site, which has significantly escalated tensions between Tehran and Washington.
According to Abdollahian, the meeting with Putin is aimed at discussing the implications of the US attack and exploring ways to strengthen Iran-Russia cooperation in the face of growing US pressure.
“We are committed to expanding our strategic ties with Russia, and today’s meeting with President Putin will focus on enhancing our bilateral cooperation, particularly in the areas of energy and defense,” Abdollahian stated in a press conference.
He emphasized that the US attack on Iranian nuclear facilities is a flagrant violation of international law and poses a serious threat to regional and global security. “The Islamic Republic of Iran will not be deterred by such acts of aggression and will continue to pursue its nuclear program for peaceful purposes,” he added.
The Iranian Foreign Minister also expressed his country’s gratitude to Russia for its consistent support on the nuclear issue, saying, “Russia has been a reliable partner for Iran, and we value its stance on our nuclear program.” Abdollahian further noted that the meeting with Putin would provide an opportunity to discuss regional and international developments, including the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
In response to questions about the US attack, Abdollahian reiterated that Iran reserves the right to defend itself and respond to any further aggression. “The US must understand that its actions will have consequences, and we will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect our sovereignty and national security,” he warned.
When asked about potential diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions, the Foreign Minister emphasized the need for the US to return to the negotiating table and abide by its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
