The Imo State Government has reiterated its commitment to addressing the growing challenge of drug abuse through strategic interventions aimed at rehabilitation, reintegration, and enforcement support.

Speaking to journalists in Owerri on Monday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Hon. Ezechukwu Obonna, declared the government’s readiness to rehabilitate individuals affected by drug addiction and reintegrate them into society as responsible citizens.

His remarks were made during a media briefing held as part of the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse observance.

According to Obonna, drug abuse poses a serious threat to public health, safety, and the social fabric of communities, especially among the youth. He emphasized that the current administration under Governor Hope Uzodinma is committed to taking bold and practical steps to reverse the trend and support victims of drug dependence.

In a demonstration of this commitment, Obonna announced that the state government had recently donated operational Hilux patrol vehicles to the Imo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). These vehicles, he said, will enhance the agency’s mobility and efficiency in tracking, preventing, and combating illicit drug trafficking and abuse within the state.

Additionally, he revealed that the wife of the governor, First Lady Barr. Chioma Uzodinma, has undertaken the renovation of a key rehabilitation centre managed by the NDLEA. The refurbished facility, he noted, will play a vital role in the treatment, recovery, and eventual reintegration of drug users into society.

Obonna concluded by calling on all stakeholders—parents, community leaders, civil society groups, and the media—to join hands with the government in the ongoing fight against drug abuse, stressing that a collective effort is crucial to safeguarding the future of the state.
