The Nigerian government has dismissed reports suggesting that its embassy in Iran has closed down, leaving citizens stranded amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the Nigerian Embassy in Tehran remains active and continues to provide support to nationals in the country. The Ministry described the circulating claims as inaccurate and misleading, cautioning the public against spreading unverified information.
While confirming that embassy operations have been disrupted by the security situation in Tehran, the Ministry explained that staff have temporarily switched to remote work arrangements due to the ongoing bombings in the city. Despite the challenges, the embassy remains fully functional and responsive to citizens’ needs.
In a positive diplomatic turn, the Nigerian government announced that arrangements to assist citizens wishing to leave Iran through Armenia have reached an advanced stage. This follows a formal engagement between Dr. Abdulrasheed Omar Lawal, Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Tehran, and Mr. Levon Petrosyan, Armenia’s Acting Director for the Middle East and Africa.
The Ministry praised Armenia’s support, describing the move as a reflection of true humanitarian partnership and international solidarity in times of crisis. It also expressed Nigeria’s appreciation for Armenia’s readiness to assist and reaffirmed its commitment to fostering strong diplomatic ties between both nations.
Efforts are now underway, in coordination with Armenian authorities and other partners, to organize a safe and structured evacuation process for Nigerians willing to leave Iran.
Nigerian citizens in Iran are advised to stay in touch with the embassy through the following emergency contacts: Esson Anzaku: +989393216872; Abutalib: +989024199018 or via email at nigeria.tehran@mfa.gov.ng, anzakuesson02@gmail.com, and lawshed@yahoo.com
Additionally, the Ministry encouraged Nigerians to remain connected with community leaders and to join the dedicated Nigerian group on the Iranian messaging platform Eitaa for timely updates.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that it continues to monitor the situation closely and will take all necessary steps to protect the lives and welfare of Nigerians in Iran and across the region.
