Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called on the National Assembly to consider amending Nigeria’s constitution to allow state governors to serve a third term.

According to him, this would help address the recurring issue of abandoned projects across the country due to frequent leadership changes.

The governor made the appeal during his ‘Thank-You Tour’ in Nembe Local Government Area, where he addressed a large crowd at King Koko Square.

He acknowledged the overwhelming support received during the 2023 governorship election and expressed appreciation to the people for re-electing him and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Diri noted that although his government is committed to completing several major projects—particularly the independent power plant expected to be ready by year-end—time limitations could hinder the delivery of other community demands. He urged constituents to ask their federal representatives to consider pushing for constitutional changes that would enable governors to serve longer terms and complete critical developments.

Speaking on the power situation, the governor announced that the state has acquired twin 60-megawatt gas turbines, which are expected to arrive soon. Installation at the Elebele site is almost done, and once operational, the facility will provide stable electricity to major areas such as Yenagoa, Nembe, Ogbia, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Sagbama, and parts of Ekeremor. He also pledged to focus on water supply once the power project is finalized.

On the demand for the Igbeta-Ewoama-Okoroba road, Diri admitted time constraints but said the state would partner with agencies like the Niger Delta Development Commission and the South-South Development Commission to pursue the project.

During his visit, Governor Diri paid homage to the Amanyanabo of Nembe, King Edmund Daukoru (Mingi XIII), and promised to renovate the palace pavilion. The monarch commended Diri for fulfilling his promises and lauded the Nembe-Brass road construction, stating, “You have proved critics wrong; the blessings of the throne will remain with you.”

Goodwill messages also came from prominent leaders including Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd), Chairman of the Bayelsa Elders Council, Attorney-General Biriyai Dambo (SAN), Nembe Council Chairman Chief David Alagoa, and PDP stalwart Chief Blessing Izagara, all praising Diri’s impactful leadership and development efforts in Nembe.
