The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao Adewale, has sounded a clear warning to all police personnel under his command, stressing the need for strict adherence to professional standards, respect for citizens’ rights, and non-interference in civil issues such as land disputes.

This strong message follows a series of complaints and reports alleging unlawful detention of citizens over bailable offences, extortion of both complainants and suspects, as well as the unwarranted involvement of police officers in civil matters that fall outside their legal jurisdiction.

Speaking on behalf of the commissioner, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, stated that CP Adewale condemned these unethical practices, which not only violate the constitutional rights of individuals but also contradict the directives issued by the Inspector-General of Police.

In response, CP Adewale has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs) to immediately review the detention status of individuals held for minor and bailable offences. He ordered that such suspects be released without delay, provided proper documentation and surety verification are in place.

The commissioner was unequivocal in his declaration that bail remains free, and any officer found collecting money for bail or related documentation would be subjected to strict disciplinary measures.

He stressed that officers must steer clear of civil cases, especially land disputes, which do not fall under police jurisdiction. Any personnel caught violating this directive—along with supervisors who fail to enforce it—will be held accountable.

CP Adewale further condemned the unethical practice of demanding payment before commencing investigations, describing it as outright extortion and abuse of office, and affirmed that erring officers would face prosecution.

Citizens were also warned not to offer bribes to officers, as doing so is a punishable offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. The public was advised against attempting to use the police as tools for debt collection or personal revenge.

The CP urged all FCT residents to collaborate with the police in promoting professionalism, transparency, and respect for human rights within the Command. Any reports of misconduct can be directed to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) via 08107314192.
