According to reports, a group of armed men launched the attack under the cover of darkness, vandalising several windows in the building. However, their plans were foiled by the timely intervention of security personnel.
Officers from the local police division, supported by community vigilantes and concerned youths, responded swiftly to the distress call.
Their combined effort succeeded in repelling the assailants before they could inflict further damage. One of the attackers, identified as Joe Suberu, was apprehended at the scene.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kogi State Police Command, SP William Aya, stated on Wednesday, June 18:
“Yes, it’s true. One suspect, Joe Suberu, was arrested at the scene. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.”
A statement released by the Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Media Office corroborated the police report, stating that the attackers were repelled and one individual was captured.
The statement alleged that Suberu, a native of the community and reputed to be a ritualist, admitted during interrogation that this was his third time participating in attacks on the senator’s family home.
During the arrest, a cutlass and charms were recovered from the suspect. Eyewitnesses also claimed that an angry mob attempted to lynch him before he was rescued and handed over to the police.
As of press time, the remaining suspects — reportedly armed with dangerous weapons — are still at large. Security has since been reinforced in the area as investigations continue.
