The conflict between Israel and Iran continues to escalate, with both countries exchanging fire for the sixth consecutive day. Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned that any US strikes on Iranian territory will have “serious irreparable consequences,” while also stating that Iran won’t accept “imposed war” or “peace”.
Amnesty International has urged both Israel and Iran to protect civilians, emphasizing that the escalating strikes have resulted in rising deaths and injuries. Agnes Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International, stressed that further escalation risks unleashing devastating consequences for civilians across the region and beyond.
The conflict has also raised concerns about the potential impact on the global economy, with oil prices surging and inflation rising. A wider war could send energy costs soaring, affecting markets worldwide.
US President Donald Trump has ramped up his rhetoric, claiming that the US now has “complete and total control of the skies over Iran”. He has also called for an unconditional Iranian surrender, warning that the US knows where Iranian leaders are hiding but doesn’t want them killed “for now”. Trump’s comments have sparked worries about potential US military involvement.
The international community has reacted cautiously, with French President Emmanuel Macron advocating for a ceasefire and a return to nuclear negotiations. Jordan’s King Abdullah II has condemned Israel’s attacks on Iran, warning that the conflict could have far-reaching consequences. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has also expressed concerns, stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is the “biggest threat to the security of the region”.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has vowed to continue its missile attacks on Israel, describing them as “focused and continuous”. The IRGC has also warned that the skies above “occupied lands” are open to Iranian missiles and drones. Former British Ambassador to Iran, Richard Dalton, believes Iran’s response is what you’d expect from an undefeated country, adding that the unpredictability of the US is a serious worry for the region.
