Records Tumble at National Para-Powerlifting Trials

The National Open Trials of the Nigeria Para-Powerlifting Federation, held at the M.K.O. Stadium in Abuja, concluded with a spectacular display of strength and determination, unearthing a new generation of para-powerlifting stars.

The three-day event, designed to identify and nurture future talents, exceeded expectations as emerging athletes shattered records previously set by seasoned competitors, signaling a bright future for Nigerian para-powerlifting.

Folasade Olufemiayo, the players’ representative, hailed the trials as a resounding success, emphasizing that the federation achieved its goal of showcasing Nigeria’s untapped potential in the sport.

Standout performers included Shade Oluwafemiayo, who lifted 160kg in the 86kg category, surpassing her world ranking lift of 130kg, and Kure Thomas, who dominated the 80kg category with a 207kg lift, exceeding his world ranking of 174kg.

Other notable athletes included Ganiyu Anifat (41kg, 97kg lift), Ogundolie Tolulope (46kg, 110kg lift), and Oyema Esther (55kg, 127kg lift), all of whom outperformed their global benchmarks, cementing their status as rising stars.

Federation Secretary General Afolabi Oluwayemi-Olabisi praised the athletes’ dedication and announced plans for a comprehensive camping program to prepare them for international competitions. “Our commitment is to take these promising lifters to the next level,” he said. “With rigorous training, they will bring glory to Nigeria on the global stage.”

The event, attended by dignitaries such as Sunday Odebode, President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, and Mrs. Techla Opara, Director of National Sports Festival & Para Sports, underscored the growing importance of para sports in the country.

As Nigeria’s para-powerlifters gear up for future challenges, the trials have ignited hope for a golden era in the sport.
