Enugu State is intensifying preparations to host the 23rd National Sports Festival in 2026, with the Coal City poised to deliver an unforgettable celebration of athletic excellence and national unity.
The state’s readiness was underscored during a strategic meeting on Tuesday between the Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Hon. Bukola Olopade, and Enugu State Governor, His Excellency Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, at the Enugu State Government House.

The productive discussion focused on ensuring early planning and seamless execution of the biennial multi-sport event, which is expected to attract thousands of athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators from across Nigeria.
Governor Mbah reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering a world-class festival that will showcase Nigeria’s sporting talent while promoting youth engagement and fostering national cohesion.
A significant milestone in the planning process was achieved with the governor’s approval of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), set to be inaugurated on Wednesday.
The LOC comprises experienced professionals in sports administration, youth development, and event planning, positioning Enugu to deliver a flawless and impactful festival.
“The National Sports Festival is more than just a competition; it’s a legacy project that transforms host cities,” Hon. Olopade stated. “Enugu has demonstrated remarkable readiness and political will, which are critical for success. We are confident in their ability to deliver.”
Enugu secured the hosting rights for the 23rd edition after a competitive bidding process, building on the successes of the Gateway Games 2024.
The state government has pledged to raise the bar by laying the groundwork for a landmark festival that will leave a lasting legacy for Nigerian sports.
