Former NBA star Al-Farouq Aminu has reaffirmed his dedication to nurturing grassroots basketball in Nigeria by donating a state-of-the-art electric scoreboard to the Oyo State Basketball Association.
The presentation took place on the final day of the 9th Al-Farouq Aminu Good Works Basketball Camp at the iconic Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan, marking another milestone in Aminu’s mission to elevate the sport in his home country.
The scoreboard was handed over to Barrister Damola Awosika, Vice Chairman of the Oyo State Basketball Association, and Taiye Sobogun, coach of the Oyo State men’s basketball team, amid applause from campers and attendees.
This donation underscores Aminu’s commitment to improving basketball infrastructure while mentoring young athletes through his annual camp, which has become a cornerstone for youth development in the region.
Aminu, the first active Nigerian NBA player to host a youth basketball camp in Nigeria, has consistently combined mentorship with tangible contributions.
“We’re starting to understand basketball in Nigeria, and that’s a beautiful thing,” Aminu remarked during the camp, urging fellow professional players to collaborate in uplifting the sport rather than working in isolation.
His call for unity reflects his broader vision of fostering organized basketball growth across the country.
Now in its ninth year, the Al-Farouq Aminu Good Works Basketball Camp provides young talents with training, mentorship, and exposure to professional standards.
The addition of the electric scoreboard enhances the association’s capacity to host competitive games, ensuring a lasting impact on Oyo State’s basketball community.
Aminu’s legacy extends beyond his NBA career, as he continues to invest in Nigeria’s future. His efforts demonstrate a rare commitment to not just returning home, but building a foundation for the next generation of Nigerian basketball stars.
