Israeli forces have killed more than 51 Palestinians and wounded many more after opening fire near an aid distribution site in southern Gaza, witnesses and rescuers report. The incident occurred near a junction to the east of Khan Younis, where thousands of Palestinians had gathered in hope of receiving flour from a World Food Programme site that also includes a community kitchen.

Witnesses describe the chaos as Israeli drones fired two missiles, followed by a shell from an Israeli tank positioned approximately 400 to 500 meters away from the crowd. This resulted in numerous casualties, overwhelming Nasser Hospital, the main functioning medical facility in the area. The hospital is so overcrowded that many wounded individuals are lying on the floor as medical staff struggle to treat their injuries.

The Israeli military has acknowledged the incident, stating that “a gathering was identified adjacent to an aid distribution truck that got stuck in the area of Khan Younis, and in proximity to IDF troops operating in the area.” They confirmed awareness of reports regarding injured individuals from IDF fire following the crowd’s approach and said the incident is under review.

This tragic event is part of a disturbing pattern of violence near aid distribution sites in Gaza. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk condemned Israel’s actions, stating, “Israel’s means and methods of warfare are inflicting horrifying, unconscionable suffering on Palestinians in Gaza.” Turk called for an investigation into the shootings near aid sites, emphasizing that Israel is weaponizing food.

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation and raised concerns about the safety of civilians in Gaza. The United Nations has expressed alarm over the incident, with UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk calling for an investigation into the shootings near aid sites. The situation in Gaza remains dire, with many Palestinians struggling to access basic necessities like food and medical care.

The Israeli military’s actions in Gaza have been the subject of international scrutiny, with many questioning the proportionality of their response. The incident has also highlighted the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations working in the region, who struggle to provide aid to those in need while navigating the complexities of the conflict.
