13 Convicted for Open Defecation, Urination

The state government has repeatedly warned against open defecation and urination, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for residents


A Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, on Monday, June 16, convicted thirteen individuals for engaging in open defecation and public urination in the Agege and Alimosho areas of Lagos State.

The accused were arrested by environmental health officers during a sanitation enforcement operation aimed at curbing unsanitary practices in public spaces. Following their arraignment in court, each of the defendants pleaded guilty to the charges brought against them.

Upon admission of guilt, the presiding magistrate sentenced all thirteen individuals to three months imprisonment each, in accordance with relevant environmental and public health laws in Lagos State.

The convicted individuals include:
Friday Samuel (49), Sulaimon Olalekan (54), Idris Jimoh (45), Alao Babatunde (54), Chinonso Dominic (21), Akeem Suraju (42), Lawal Idris (29), Oluwatobi Adebayo (30), Ismaila Adeyemi (35), Murtala Jamilu (20), Samson Memudia (54), Jamilu Abdullahi (29), and Ganiyu Akeem (55).

The state government has repeatedly warned against open defecation and urination, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for residents. Authorities have also intensified monitoring and enforcement efforts across public spaces, especially in densely populated areas, to discourage such unhygienic practices.

This latest conviction serves as a warning to others who may disregard public sanitation laws, as the government continues its campaign to achieve a cleaner and safer Lagos.
