A tragic incident occurred in Taraba State on Sunday, June 15, 2025, when the roof of the United Methodist Church Nigeria (UMCN) suddenly collapsed during a worship service.
The church is situated behind the Police Divisional Office in the Jantaro community, located within Mutum-Biyu town — the administrative headquarters of Gassol Local Government Area.
According to sources who spoke with Daily Trust, a heavy downpour combined with a fierce windstorm caused the structure to give way while worshippers were inside attending the service. Despite the frightening collapse, fortunately, no fatalities were reported.
However, several worshippers sustained injuries of varying degrees. Those with minor wounds were immediately taken to Mutum-Biyu Referral Hospital for medical care. Meanwhile, individuals who suffered fractures were quickly brought to a local bone setter in the community for urgent treatment.
Alhaji Baffa Wanzami, the town’s renowned bone setter, shared with the publication that he treated three injured persons, including a young girl who suffered broken bones in her arms and legs.
“It is deeply saddening that such an accident happened during a time of worship. The injured, especially the little girl with fractures, were brought to me, and I was able to set their broken limbs,” Wanzami said.
In addition to the church collapse, residents in Mutum-Biyu reported that the storm caused significant damage to some houses in the town. Local resident Musa Adamu confirmed the destruction, emphasizing the severity of the weather’s impact on the community.
