The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has stepped up efforts to end the growing violence in Benue State by ordering the deployment of additional tactical teams. His move follows the tragic loss of lives in recent attacks that have left communities devastated.
On Monday, the police chief visited the state to see the situation firsthand. Accompanied by top-ranking officers—including DIG Yakubu Kwazhi, DIG Adebola Hamzat, AIG Zachariah Fera, and CP Abayomi Shogunle—the IGP began his tour at the Government House in Makurdi.
There, he met with Governor Hyacinth Alia and expressed his condolences over the spate of killings. The governor welcomed the visit and commended the police for their consistent support, especially through the deployment of personnel and resources.
During the meeting, Egbetokun described the attacks as acts of terror and outright wickedness. He assured the governor that the police would leave no stone unturned in tracking down those responsible and restoring calm across affected areas.
From the Government House, the IGP proceeded to the Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, where he surveyed the destruction and met with local leaders.
He was joined at the site by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. Together, they engaged residents and reassured them that stronger security measures were on the way.
In a statement released by Police Spokesperson ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, it was confirmed that DIG Yakubu Kwazhi has been assigned to directly oversee the new tactical operations. According to the IGP, the police are not just reacting—they are reinforcing their presence to prevent future attacks.
Egbetokun ended his visit by addressing officers at the Benue State Command headquarters in Makurdi. He promised them improved welfare and operational support as they face difficult challenges on the ground.
The police leadership reaffirmed its commitment to peace in Benue and emphasized that justice will be pursued. The IGP also echoed the federal government’s stance, noting that the security of lives and property remains a top priority under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
