The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, has emphasized the urgent need for the prompt delivery of 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters currently being procured from the United States, citing their critical role in bolstering Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts and internal security operations.
Abubakar made this known during a high-level programme management review meeting held in San Diego, California, from June 9 to 13, 2025. The meeting brought together top officials from the United States Government and Bell Textron—the manufacturers of the AH-1Z Viper helicopters—to assess the progress of the procurement deal and fine-tune timelines for its execution.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) spokesperson, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet Ejodame, the air chief reaffirmed Nigeria’s firm commitment to ensuring the timely acquisition and smooth integration of the aircraft into NAF operations.
“We are fully committed to ensuring these platforms are delivered in the shortest possible time. Every necessary step will be taken to facilitate a seamless procurement and integration process,” Abubakar was quoted as saying.
He further expressed deep appreciation to the United States Government for its continued strategic partnership with Nigeria. According to him, the acquisition of the AH-1Z helicopters—renowned for their precision strike capabilities, survivability, and advanced avionics—will significantly elevate the combat capacity, mission readiness, and overall operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Air Force across various conflict zones in the country.
As part of his working visit, Air Marshal Abubakar also visited Camp Pendleton, where he met with senior officers of the United States Marine Corps. There, he conducted an inspection of AH-1Z helicopters currently in use by Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 367 and Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 39. The visit provided valuable insights into the optimal methods for operating, maintaining, and sustaining the advanced helicopter platforms.
“This visit has provided a unique opportunity to understand best practices for the operation, sustainment, and logistical support of the AH-1Z platform from the United States Marine Corps,” Ejodame added in the statement.
Abubakar extended appreciation to the U.S. government for its continued partnership with Nigeria, while also acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s consistent support for the Nigerian Air Force.
According to him, the progress in the helicopter deal reflects the government’s strong commitment to strengthening national defense capabilities.
