Kamaru Usman, the former UFC welterweight champion, returned to the win column on Saturday night, securing a unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley in the main event of UFC Atlanta at State Farm Arena.

The triumph marked a significant moment for “The Nigerian Nightmare,” who ended a three-fight losing streak with a commanding performance against the No. 7-ranked contender.

Usman, ranked No. 5 in the welterweight division, had not fought since October 2023, entering the bout under intense pressure to reclaim his standing among the division’s elite. Facing him was Buckley, a surging American fighter riding a six-fight winning streak, including a notable doctor-stoppage victory over former interim titleholder Colby Covington last December.

Known for his devastating power, Buckley boasted 15 knockouts in his 27 career wins, making him a formidable challenge for the former champion.

From the opening bell, Usman showcased his trademark wrestling and relentless pressure, neutralizing Buckley’s explosive striking.

Over five grueling rounds, Usman controlled the pace, landing precise strikes and securing key takedowns to stifle Buckley’s offense.

When the final horn sounded, the judges’ scorecards reflected Usman’s dominance, with all three scoring the fight 49-46 in his favor. The victory not only halted Usman’s skid but also reaffirmed his place among the welterweight division’s top contenders.

For Buckley, the loss snapped his impressive streak, but his performance underscored his potential as a future title threat.

Meanwhile, Usman’s win sets the stage for a potential clash with other top-ranked fighters as he looks to climb back toward championship contention.

The event, held before a packed crowd at State Farm Arena, highlighted Usman’s resilience and skill, proving that “The Nigerian Nightmare” remains a force in the UFC.
