The Christian community in Plateau State has been thrown into mourning following the death of the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state, Most Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo. The revered Catholic priest reportedly passed away in the early hours of Sunday, June 15, 2025.
The sad development was confirmed in an official statement issued by the Archdiocesan Chancellor of the Catholic Archdiocese of Jos, Rev. Fr. Daniel Gyang. According to the statement, the death of Fr. Lubo was received with deep sorrow but with complete submission to the will of God.
“On a sad note but with total submission to the will of God, we hereby announce the passing unto eternal glory of Very Rev. Fr. Polycarp Lubo, who departed this life in the early hours of Sunday, 15th June, 2025,” the statement read.
The Catholic Archbishop of Jos, in his message of condolence, extended heartfelt sympathies to the immediate family of the deceased, the Plateau State Chapter of CAN, the presbyterium of the Archdiocese, as well as the parishioners of St. William’s Parish, Zawan, where Fr. Lubo served as Parish Priest and Dean of Zawan Deanery.
He also extended condolences to the wider community of religious and lay faithful across the Archdiocese of Jos, noting the significant role Fr. Lubo played both in spiritual leadership and in uniting the Christian community across denominational lines.
The Archbishop concluded his statement with a solemn prayer for the peaceful repose of Fr. Lubo’s soul and for the souls of all the faithful departed, entrusting them to the infinite mercy of God.
Fr. Polycarp Lubo was widely known and respected not only for his pastoral devotion but also for his tireless commitment to interdenominational unity and peace in Plateau State. His passing marks a great loss to the Christian body in Nigeria, particularly at a time when spiritual guidance and moral leadership are deeply needed.
