The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has appointed former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as the new manager of the Italy national football team, replacing Luciano Spalletti, who announced his resignation last week.

The announcement comes as Italy prepares to compete in the 2026 World Cup, exactly 20 years after Gattuso’s pivotal role in the nation’s 2006 World Cup triumph.

Gattuso, 47, a revered figure in Italian football, earned 73 caps for the Azzurri during his playing career and was a cornerstone of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad. Known for his tenacity and leadership on the pitch, the AC Milan legend now faces the challenge of revitalizing a national team that has struggled in recent years.

Italy’s failure to qualify for the past two World Cups and last summer’s European Championship has left fans eager for a turnaround. A decisive 3-0 defeat to Norway in World Cup qualifying on June 6 marked the end of Spalletti’s tenure, prompting the FIGC to turn to Gattuso.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina hailed Gattuso’s appointment, stating, “Gattuso is a symbol of Italian football. The blue jersey is like a second skin for him. His motivations, professionalism, and experience will be fundamental to best face the upcoming commitments of the national team.”

Gattuso’s appointment has sparked optimism among supporters, who hope his fiery determination and deep connection to Italian football will steer the team back to glory.

Gattuso, who has previously managed clubs like AC Milan and Napoli, will be officially presented to the media on Thursday. As Italy looks ahead to the 2026 World Cup, all eyes will be on Gattuso to restore the nation’s footballing pride.
