Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, the 25-year-old pole vaulting prodigy, shattered the men’s pole vault world record for an unprecedented 12th time, clearing an astonishing 6.28 meters at the Diamond League meeting in Stockholm on Sunday.

This remarkable feat, achieved in his mother’s native Sweden, held special significance for the Olympic champion, marking his first world record on Swedish soil.

Duplantis, born in the United States but competing for Sweden, had already clinched victory in the event before attempting the record-breaking height.

With a flawless first-attempt clearance, he unleashed a wave of euphoria, removing his vest and celebrating with friends, family, and an adoring home crowd. “I feel full to the brim right now,” said the double Olympic gold medalist, visibly moved by the moment.

The Stockholm record was a personal milestone for Duplantis, who had described it as “the only thing missing” from his illustrious career. Reflecting on his journey, he recalled his first jump at the same stadium at age 11, clearing just under four meters in cold, rainy conditions.

“They etch the names of world record holders here,” Duplantis said. “It’s going to be really special to have my name etched in the stadium. It’s the most beautiful stadium, in my biased opinion.”

Duplantis first claimed the world record in February 2020, surpassing France’s Renaud Lavillenie with a 6.17-meter clearance in Poland. Since then, he has redefined the sport, pushing the boundaries of pole vaulting with each record-breaking performance. Sunday’s achievement, he noted, would be “one of the greatest memories” of his career.

The evening proved unforgettable for the Swedish crowd, as Andreas Almgren added to the celebrations by setting a European record in the men’s 5,000 meters, securing a thrilling victory.
