US President Donald Trump has called on Iran to agree to US demands to restrict its nuclear program, as Tehran vows a strong response to Israeli air strikes targeting its nuclear sites and military facilities. The strikes, which killed at least two senior military commanders and several nuclear scientists, have escalated tensions in the region.
“Iran must make a deal, before there is nothing left… JUST DO IT, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. In a separate post, Trump claimed Iran may have a second chance, saying, “I told them what to do, but they just couldn’t get there. Now they have, perhaps, a second chance!”
Trump praised Israel’s attacks on Iran, stating, “I think it’s been excellent. And there’s more to come. A lot more.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Iran not to target American interests or personnel in the region in retaliation, warning that Washington would hold Tehran responsible for any consequences.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned Israel that it “must expect severe punishment” after the assault. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Israel would “regret” its attacks, stating, “The Iranian nation and the country’s officials will not remain silent in the face of this crime, and the legitimate and powerful response of the Islamic Republic of Iran will make the enemy regret its foolish act.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported damage to the Natanz nuclear site, with contamination detected inside the facility. The agency’s chief, Rafael Grossi, called for restraint and warned of safety risks.
The conflict has sparked fears of a wider regional war, with Iran launching waves of missiles at Israel in response to the attacks. Mohammad Eslami, a research fellow at Tehran University, believes Iranian leaders are preparing an imminent strike on Israel targeting military and nuclear facilities. “The Iranian military were thinking about this scenario for many years, and also in recent days, we have heard lots of statements by the Defence Ministry of Iran that they are ready for any strike by the Israelis,” he said.
The situation has raised questions about the future of nuclear talks between the US and Iran, with some observers doubting whether the planned talks will proceed. Trump’s demands for “zero” enrichment in Iran have been met with resistance from Tehran, which insists its nuclear program is for civilian purposes.
