The Defence Headquarters has announced the arrest of a Chinese national claiming to be a miner, alongside several suspected suppliers and collaborators of terrorist groups, during a series of military operations in Borno and Yobe States.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, disclosed this development on Friday, June 13, during a media briefing in Abuja. He said the foreigner was apprehended during strategic operations conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai in Kukawa and Ngala Local Government Areas of Borno State.

Kangye revealed that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the suspect’s real identity, his reasons for being in the region, and whether he has ties to any criminal or insurgent activities.

“He is currently in detention and being thoroughly interrogated,” Kangye stated. “We are examining the details of how he got there, whether he acted alone or with accomplices, and what exactly he was doing in the area. Once the investigation is concluded, the findings will be made public.”

He further disclosed that, between June 6 and 11, increased military operations in the North-East led to the surrender of several Boko Haram and ISWAP members, including women and children. The mounting pressure from the military, he said, is forcing insurgents out of hiding and weakening their strongholds.

Highlighting the military’s broader security efforts, Kangye noted that the Armed Forces have stepped up operations across the country in response to various threats. These intensified efforts, he said, reflect a firm commitment to defeating terrorism and restoring stability in troubled regions.

“The Nigerian military remains unwavering in its mission to protect lives and property, uphold the rule of law, and preserve the unity and sovereignty of the nation,” he stressed.

He also assured that the military will maintain transparency in its operations and continue to keep the public informed. “Our resolve is firm, and we will keep Nigerians updated as we progress in securing the country and ensuring a peaceful environment for all,” Kangye concluded.
