The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has called on all Nigerians to honour the sacrifices of the June 12 heroes by remaining vigilant custodians of the nation’s democracy as the country marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule.
The Secretary emphasized in his welcome address at the Democracy Day public lecture held on Thursday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, that democracy and development are inseparable. He said,
“We can only immortalize the legacy of our June 12 heroes by diligently guiding and protecting our democracy. Democracy without development is hollow and destined to fail.”
The SGF paid heartfelt tribute to the countless Nigerians who courageously stood against military dictatorship, reminding the audience that the democratic freedoms enjoyed today were hard-earned—secured through bloodshed, sacrifice, and unwavering resilience.
“Today’s celebration would be impossible if not for the commitment and resolve of ordinary Nigerians who stood firm in the face of military oppression, brutality, and denial of fundamental rights.”
The Secretary highlighted the historic June 12 struggle as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s journey, recounting the massive nationwide protests that swept across cities from Lagos and Ilorin to Kaduna, Kano, Ibadan, Makurdi, Bauchi, Jos, Port Harcourt, and Enugu.
“The mass protests of the 1990s crystallized into a powerful national movement that eventually paved the way for the democratic rebirth we now celebrate.”
The SGF solemnly acknowledged the sacrifices made by many: “We are here today because countless individuals fought valiantly. Many lost their lives; many were brutalized or disappeared; some lost limbs or were imprisoned; many sacrificed their resources and some never fully recovered. To all these heroes, we owe an enduring debt of gratitude.”
The Secretary observed that, amid growing political instability across parts of Africa, Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to democracy stands as a beacon on the continent.
“At a time when several African nations are sliding back into military rule and authoritarianism, Nigeria continues to advance firmly on the path of democratic governance. While we have yet to reach the democratic heights we aspire to, we remain confident that our trajectory is clear and will lead us to our desired destination.”
The SGF also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his proven democratic credentials and bold reform agenda. He described the President as a patriot and steadfast champion of democracy, saying:
“President Tinubu is a leader who understands democracy intimately — a true foot soldier in Nigeria’s democratic struggle.”
The Secretary recalled Tinubu’s significant role in the nation’s democratic evolution: “As a pivotal figure in Nigeria’s fight for democracy, Tinubu faced numerous challenges and made profound sacrifices in his quest for democratic governance. His dedication has greatly contributed to the country’s democratic transition and his unwavering commitment to democratic ideals is commendable.”
The SGF concluded by lauding the Tinubu administration’s ambitious efforts to transform Nigeria through economic revitalization, infrastructural development, and targeted reforms.
“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has embarked on an unprecedented journey to re-engineer the nation — positioning it for sustainable growth and prosperity.”
