As Nigeria celebrates 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has once again emphasized its firm resolve to collaborate closely with the Federal Government and other key stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Democracy Day, Thursday, the chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, extended warm congratulations to Nigerians nationwide.

He marked June 12 as a historic milestone—an enduring symbol of the nation’s hard-fought democratic progress.

“On behalf of my colleagues at the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, I congratulate all Nigerians on this important occasion,” Governor AbdulRazaq declared.

“June 12 is a watershed moment in our nation’s history. We join President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and other stakeholders in honouring the courageous heroes and heroines whose sacrifices and steadfast commitment secured democratic rule for our country.”

Governor AbdulRazaq acknowledged the significant contributions of pro-democracy advocates who championed the cause of freedom, justice, and civilian administration. Their bravery and resilience, he affirmed, are the foundations upon which Nigeria’s current political stability stands.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic trajectory since the restoration of civilian rule in 1999, the NGF chairman observed that the country has achieved meaningful progress across several sectors, despite facing ongoing challenges.

“The past 26 years of continuous democracy have witnessed considerable advancement in different spheres of our national life,” he noted. “Nevertheless, like every other society, Nigeria contends with its own set of challenges and aspirations.”

He urged Nigerians to embrace constructive dialogue and leverage democratic institutions as essential tools to resolve conflicts and enhance national development.

Looking ahead, the governors collectively pledged to deepen their cooperation with the Federal Government, civil society organizations, and development partners to expand democratic space and reinforce the values that underpin Nigeria’s democracy.

“As custodians of the people’s mandate, we commit ourselves to working alongside all stakeholders—including the Federal Government, civic groups, and development partners—to broaden democratic participation and create an environment ripe for sustainable peace and inclusive prosperity,” Governor AbdulRazaq affirmed.
