We have endured two years of profound disappointment—two years marked by insecurity, bloodshed, destruction of property, and administrative incompetence. There has been a steady decline in every area of governance. It is, by all standards, a failed government

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Patriotic Volunteers have delivered a scathing critique of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration in Kano State, declaring it a colossal disappointment that has failed to meet public expectations, despite the massive financial resources at its disposal.

Addressing journalists during a press briefing in Kano on Wednesday, the National President of the group, Alhaji Usman Alhaji, accused the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP)-led administration of underperformance and mismanagement.

He argued that the government had failed woefully in delivering on its electoral promises, particularly in light of the billions of naira accrued through Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), and other income sources available to the state.

Alhaji, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, emphasized that every resident of Kano deserves competent governance, regardless of political affiliation.

“We have a democratic right and civic duty to hold this government accountable. Leadership is not just about slogans—it is about results,” he stated.

Highlighting key areas of concern, the group pointed to the administration’s dismal performance in the education sector. While the government had earlier declared a state of emergency in education and allocated 31% of the 2025 budget to it, Alhaji said that the results on the ground do not reflect such prioritization. “Despite bold declarations and budgetary allocations, the sector remains in a state of decay,” he said.

The APC Patriotic Volunteers also criticized the abandonment of critical infrastructure projects across the state. According to Alhaji, more than 20 roads and two flyovers that were initiated have either stalled or been abandoned halfway, creating potential for increased traffic congestion and flooding within Kano’s urban areas.

The group further raised concerns about the state’s growing debt burden. Citing data from the Debt Management Office (DMO), Alhaji revealed that between June and December 2023, the Yusuf-led government secured foreign loans amounting to $6.6 million.

“Despite this significant borrowing, there is virtually nothing visible to show for it. The people of Kano deserve transparency and a full account of how these funds were utilized,” he demanded.

Drawing comparisons with recent national efforts, Alhaji commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his initiative to clear Nigeria’s $10 billion debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He said such responsible leadership contrasts starkly with what he described as the opacity and lack of progress in Kano’s current administration. “If the state government claims to be running a transparent system, then it must disclose the full picture of its current debt profile,” he added.

In a final assessment, the group’s president did not mince words. “We have endured two years of profound disappointment—two years marked by insecurity, bloodshed, destruction of property, and administrative incompetence. There has been a steady decline in every area of governance. It is, by all standards, a failed government,” he declared.

The APC Patriotic Volunteers concluded their remarks by urging citizens to remain vigilant and to demand better governance, asserting that Kano State deserves a government that is accountable, responsive, and capable of meaningful development.
