The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has named seasoned journalist and media strategist, Adeshina Oyetayo, as his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation.

The appointment, which officially took effect in March, has been hailed as a strategic move to reinforce the Speaker’s media engagement and legislative visibility.

Bringing over 20 years of experience in journalism and strategic communications, Oyetayo is expected to spearhead a renewed approach to media relations, documentation, and public messaging from the Speaker’s office.

His track record in media consultancy, investigative reporting, and policy communication positions him to reshape how the Lagos Assembly engages with the public and stakeholders.

Oyetayo’s appointment is seen by analysts as timely and impactful. With growing demand for transparency and proactive communication from public institutions, his role will likely focus on crafting clear narratives around the legislative agenda, enhancing public trust, and ensuring robust media documentation of the Assembly’s proceedings.

A respected name in Nigerian journalism, Oyetayo began his media career at TELL magazine in 2002. He later joined Punch Newspapers as an external columnist in 2010, and went on to serve as Managing Editor of Lagos Indicator in 2014. He was also an investigative reporter for BBC’s Africa Eye, where he contributed to impactful undercover reports.

Beyond journalism, he led XS-Proficient Media Services as CEO and Editor-in-Chief. The company publishes theassemblyng.com, a reputable, National Assembly-accredited platform that reports on legislative affairs across Nigeria.

Oyetayo is also a published author. His book, Behind the Streets, offers a compelling exploration of the histories and identities behind Lagos street names and neighborhoods, highlighting his blend of cultural insight and investigative depth.

Throughout his career, he has earned both national and international recognition. He was named CNN/MultiChoice African Journalist Awards finalist in 2006, and clinched the Young Journalist of the Year award in 2005.

Additional accolades include being named Journalist of the Year at The Future Awards Africa (2007) and winning Best Music Writer at the MTV MAMA Awards in 2010.

Academically, Oyetayo holds a diploma in Mass Communication from Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, and a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Lagos—qualifications that complement his practical experience in media and communication strategy.

Stakeholders within and outside the Assembly have lauded the decision, noting that his expertise will strengthen the Speaker’s public engagement, streamline information flow, and enhance the institutional documentation process.

As he assumes this new role, expectations are high that Adeshina Oyetayo will significantly contribute to modernizing communication frameworks and promoting legislative transparency in Lagos State.
