Veteran nationalist and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has described Nigeria’s democratic experience as a continuous journey that requires dedication, vision, and patriotism to achieve its full potential.

In a personally signed Democracy Day message made available in Akure, Ondo State, the elder statesman emphasized that democracy in Nigeria is still evolving. He called on leaders and citizens alike to remain committed to building a just, equitable, and prosperous nation.

“Democracy, by its very nature, is a process that must be nurtured,” he noted. “As we commemorate another Democracy Day, we must recognise that our journey is far from over. However, with purposeful leadership and a citizenry driven by patriotism and national interest, we can achieve the Nigeria of our dreams.”

Reflecting on the significance of June 12, Fasoranti said the date serves as a powerful reminder of Nigeria’s rich diversity and the shared ambition to build a nation grounded in justice, equity, and the collective well-being of all its people.

“June 12 is not just a date in history; it is a symbol of our determination to overcome ethnic, religious, and political divisions in order to secure a better future for all Nigerians,” he said. “It reminds us that unity in diversity remains our greatest strength.”

He also paid tribute to the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists, civil society groups, and committed citizens who fought for Nigeria’s return to civil rule. In particular, he hailed the efforts of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which, alongside Afenifere, played a pivotal role in the restoration of democracy and the birth of the Fourth Republic in 1999.

“We owe our uninterrupted democratic journey to the bravery and persistence of those heroes and heroines who risked everything to bring about change,” Fasoranti remarked. “It is reassuring to see that progressive forces are still active, watchful, and committed to upholding democratic principles.”

However, Fasoranti noted that democracy alone cannot thrive without security. He expressed concern over the persistent threat posed by criminal elements, particularly in the northern region of the country, despite ongoing efforts to curb insecurity.

“It is troubling that despite various interventions, banditry continues to destabilize parts of our country,” he lamented. “This calls for urgent reforms, including the establishment of state and community policing systems, to bring security closer to the people.”

He further advocated for a return to a truly federal structure, where each region enjoys a degree of autonomy, similar to the arrangement under Nigeria’s First Republic. According to him, such a system will not only promote national cohesion but also accelerate development across the country.

“To achieve lasting peace and progress, we must embrace federalism in practice, not just in theory,” he said. “This means empowering the component units of the federation to manage their own affairs while contributing to the strength of the whole.”

Fasoranti concluded his address by calling on all Nigerians, regardless of ethnic, religious, or political differences, to join hands in building a nation that future generations will be proud of.

“The essence of Democracy Day is to remind us that unity is not only possible but necessary,” he said. “Together, with shared resolve and commitment, we can overcome our challenges and forge a truly democratic and prosperous Nigeria.”
