Popular Nigerian actor, activist, and skit maker Adebowale Adedayo, widely known as Mr Macaroni, has publicly declared that he has consistently rejected multiple invitations from the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as politicians at the state and local levels. The outspoken entertainer made this revelation while reacting to mounting comparisons between himself and Nigerian chess master Tunde Onakoya, who recently visited President Tinubu at the Aso Villa.
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) on June 11, 2025, Mr Macaroni addressed critics and political loyalists, particularly supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), who have tried to paint him as a symbol of moral authority in contrast to celebrities seen fraternizing with political leaders.
“I have said this times without number! I am nobody’s hero! I am not a saint! Na all of us get our own for body!” Macaroni stated emphatically. “APC rascals have always pushed the narrative that I have something against anyone that visits political leaders. I have never criticized anyone for doing so. That I don’t care for politicians doesn’t make me the good guy. It certainly doesn’t make those who do the bad ones either. It’s a matter of personal choice.”
Known for his fearless activism during the #EndSARS protests in 2020 and beyond, Mr Macaroni has built a reputation for being critical of governmental oppression and lack of accountability. However, he was quick to caution against unfairly weaponizing his values to judge others, like Onakoya, whose recent meeting with Tinubu sparked online backlash.
Responding directly to political supporters attempting to taint his public image, he said: “Invitations choke on different levels!!! Local ooo, State ooo, Federal ooo… The list long! Invitations you people are slaving for!!! But I promise, you will continue to cry, weep and gnash your teeth because all will be continuously rejected! There shall be no compromise!”
Macaroni’s statement highlights an increasing divide between youth influencers and Nigeria’s political elite. While many Nigerian entertainers choose to align with politicians for visibility, influence, or personal gain, Mr Macaroni has deliberately avoided such associations, citing the need to maintain independence and public trust.
He further emphasized that he has nothing personal against celebrities who accept invitations to meet with the government or political figures. “I have tweeted this several times. Somehow, APC rascals still want to find a way to drag my name into their misery and misfortune,” he said.
The online storm erupted following Tunde Onakoya’s high-profile visit to President Tinubu at Aso Rock after his Guinness World Record-breaking chess marathon. While some praised the move as a national recognition of excellence, others viewed it as a compromise of the values Onakoya seemed to represent.
Macaroni, however, was firm in disassociating himself from the backlash against Onakoya, reiterating that every Nigerian has the freedom to engage with the system as they choose, especially if the purpose is non-partisan or aimed at national development.
The revelation by Mr Macaroni has stirred renewed debate on the role of celebrities in Nigerian politics. While some argue that entertainers should use their influence to engage with government and foster dialogue, others believe that aligning with politicians risks compromising integrity and diluting the messages of change and accountability they preach.
Analysts say Mr Macaroni’s unwavering stance could inspire a broader rethink among young Nigerians about the relationship between influence, activism, and political power.
As Nigeria’s 2027 general elections loom on the horizon, Mr Macaroni’s rejection of political invitations serves as a bold reminder that not all public figures are eager to cozy up to the corridors of power. Whether his approach will continue to resonate with fans or cause further division remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: Mr Macaroni has carved out a unique space in Nigeria’s sociopolitical landscape as a consistent voice of dissent, integrity, and fearless authenticity.
