Afropop star Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has revealed that international music sensation Davido was instrumental in landing him a record deal with Sony Music Africa, despite their professional separation in 2021.

In an exclusive interview with Ghana’s 3Music TV, the “Certified Loner” crooner dispelled long-standing speculations of a rift between him and his former record label boss, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido. Contrary to widespread assumptions that his departure from Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) created a strain in their relationship, Mayorkun credited Davido with facilitating his next big move.

“Aside from having my own label right now, I am also with Sony Music Africa. Shout out to Davido for that as well—he facilitated the deal,” Mayorkun stated.

Mayorkun’s departure from DMW in 2021 came after a successful five-year run that saw the release of multiple hit singles and two studio albums—The Mayor of Lagos (2018) and Back In Office (2021). His exit raised eyebrows among fans and critics alike, especially as both artists appeared to pursue different directions musically and professionally.

Mayorkun’s revelation paints a picture of a bond that transcends record deals and business dynamics. While fans often draw battle lines between major Afrobeats stars and their protégés, the singer’s recent comment reaffirms the brotherhood and mentorship that exists within the industry.

Their enduring relationship, many argue, is reflective of Davido’s longstanding reputation for elevating young talent. Since launching DMW in 2016, Davido has played a key role in the rise of several artists, including Peruzzi, Dremo, and Liya. Mayorkun, who was famously discovered through a viral Instagram video in which he covered Davido’s hit “The Money,” remains one of DMW’s most successful alumni.

Now operating under his own imprint and with backing from Sony Music Africa, Mayorkun is cementing his evolution as a global artist. His new deal positions him to reach broader audiences across the continent and beyond, aligning with the trend of Nigerian artists securing strategic international partnerships.

Sony Music Africa, the regional arm of global music giant Sony Music Entertainment, has ramped up its interest in the West African market over the past few years. Its portfolio now includes acts such as Wizkid (through RCA), Gyakie, and now Mayorkun. These signings are part of a wider move to export Afrobeats globally.

With the rise of digital streaming platforms and increased appetite for African music worldwide, the support of a global label like Sony provides critical infrastructure—distribution, marketing, and international tour support—that can be pivotal for African artists seeking sustainable growth.

Davido’s latest gesture further cements his image as Afrobeats’ kingmaker—a moniker he has earned for using his influence and network to uplift younger artists. His ability to remain relevant while shaping the careers of others showcases a unique leadership quality in the industry.

In 2023, Davido also partnered with UnitedMasters to support rising talents and announced his Davido Foundation to empower creatives across Africa. His facilitation of Mayorkun’s Sony deal is yet another testament to his commitment to building a global legacy through others.

Mayorkun’s successful transition from a label signee to an independent act with global representation is symbolic of a larger trend within the Nigerian music industry. As artists grow more aware of their value and seek ownership, many are now looking beyond traditional label structures—opting for joint ventures, licensing agreements, and distribution partnerships that provide both autonomy and global scale.

With Mayorkun now flying the Sony Music Africa banner, fans eagerly anticipate new music that reflects his growth and creative freedom. For an artist who once sang “Mayor of Lagos,” the world may now be his new constituency.
