June 12: Gov Buni Hails Yobe Citizens as Pillars of Democratic Growth
As Nigeria marks the annual Democracy Day celebration, Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni, has expressed deep appreciation to the people of the state for their unwavering support and active participation in governance, describing them as the true pillars of democracy.
In a special message to commemorate the June 12 Democracy Day, Governor Buni noted that the sustained support from citizens for government programmes and policies has significantly strengthened democratic governance in Yobe State. He emphasized that democracy thrives where people are actively engaged and have a genuine sense of ownership over the institutions that serve them.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s 26 years of uninterrupted democratic rule, the governor highlighted the transformation in civic engagement, stating that democratic governance has enabled citizens to participate meaningfully in decision-making processes and governance at all levels.
“It is gratifying that democracy has provided the opportunity for our people to have their voices heard, to take part in governance, and to truly own their government,” he said.
Governor Buni also underscored his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance, particularly through youth empowerment. He pointed to the appointments of young people into key roles — including commissioners, heads of agencies, special advisers, assistants, and focal persons — as a deliberate strategy to infuse new energy into leadership and ensure the voices of the younger generation are represented. According to him, this inclusive approach has enhanced governance in the state and laid a foundation for a more prosperous future.
He further reiterated his government’s open-door policy, which allows for robust citizen engagement and fosters a greater sense of belonging among the populace. “We believe that when people are actively involved in the governance process, they feel more connected and responsible for the progress of the state,” Buni noted.
Looking ahead, Governor Buni assured the people of Yobe that his administration remains committed to delivering the dividends of democracy. He pledged that all ongoing projects will be completed with high standards to ensure they serve the intended purposes and provide value for public resources.
In his closing remarks, the governor called on citizens to support efforts toward peace and development by embracing agriculture, especially during the rainy season, and by cooperating with security agencies. He also urged the public to promote unity and peaceful coexistence as vital ingredients for sustainable democratic growth and improved governance.
“Our collective efforts, especially in promoting peace, engaging in productive ventures like farming, and supporting democratic institutions, will guarantee a brighter and more prosperous future for our state and our nation,” he concluded.
