As Nigerians commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Adekunle Salako, has urged all citizens to uphold unity and actively contribute to national progress.

In a message delivered on Thursday to mark the June 12 anniversary, Dr. Salako reflected on the deep historical and symbolic meaning of the date. He paid homage to the countless sacrifices made by both past and present champions of Nigeria’s democratic journey, highlighting the importance of remembering their contributions not only through words but through our collective actions.

“Let us honour the legacy of our democratic heroes—those who paid the ultimate price and those still fighting for a better Nigeria—by fostering unity and working diligently for the nation’s advancement,” he encouraged. Salako noted that genuine patriotism must go beyond ceremony, calling on Nigerians to demonstrate their loyalty through service, solidarity, and shared responsibility.

Drawing attention to the significance of the 1993 presidential election, Salako described Chief M.K.O. Abiola as “the uncrowned king of the era,” stating that the democratic strides of June 12 eventually paved the way for the institutional recognition of May 29 as Democracy Day. That election, widely regarded as the most transparent in the nation’s history, remains a cornerstone in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.

The minister further underscored the enduring power of hope, resilience, and unity in navigating Nigeria’s challenges. “We must keep hope alive,” he said, encouraging citizens to remain optimistic and committed to building a more inclusive and prosperous nation.

Dr. Salako’s message served as a call to action—a reminder that democracy is not just a destination, but a continuous journey shaped by the dedication of a united people.
