In the early hours of Tuesday, June 11, 2025, two individuals were apprehended for illegally dumping refuse by the roadside along the Ikorodu–Itowolo highway in Lagos State.

The arrest was carried out by operatives from the Monitoring and Compliance Department of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), as part of intensified efforts to curb environmental violations across the state.

Following their arrest, the suspects were promptly transferred to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Task Force office in Oshodi for further investigation and processing. The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the development via a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. He emphasized the government’s zero tolerance for environmental abuse and reiterated the administration’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and public hygiene in the state.

Commissioner Wahab stated that the suspects have been handed over to the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps for prosecution. They will be charged in accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. He also assured the public that the offenders will be arraigned in court as soon as possible.

The arrest underscores the state’s resolve to strictly enforce environmental regulations and deter residents from engaging in acts that degrade the environment. Authorities have urged the public to dispose of waste responsibly and to report any illegal dumping activities to the appropriate agencies.
