Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to hosting the 23rd African Fencing Championships, scheduled for June 25-29, 2025, in Lagos. This marks the fourth time the prestigious event will be held in Sub-Saharan Africa, following previous editions in Senegal (2002, 2009) and Mali (2019).

The announcement was made during a vibrant media conference on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, at the Lagos Fencing Club, where excitement for the upcoming tournament was palpable.

Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, expressed immense pride in Nigeria’s role as host. “This is a historic moment for Nigerian sports and the African continent,” Samuel declared. “Lagos will welcome Africa’s finest fencing talents, showcasing not just athletic prowess but Nigeria’s growing prominence in the sport.” He highlighted Nigeria’s track record, having successfully hosted the African Junior Championships in 2018 and 2022, and the Fencing World Cup in 2024. “Nigeria is emerging as a fencing hub in Africa, and this championship underscores our dedication and progress,” he added.

The event will be held at Charterhouse Lagos, West Africa’s first British independent school, known for its world-class facilities and a legacy spanning over 400 years of British academic tradition. The venue previously hosted Nigeria’s inaugural Fencing World Cup, cementing its reputation as a premier sporting destination.

Samuel assured the 26 African nations, bringing over 200 athletes, of a world-class experience. “Expect exceptional hospitality, seamless organization, and the vibrant spirit of Lagos, enriched with cultural showcases and pan-African unity,” he said.

The championships promise to elevate Nigeria’s standing in African sports while offering a platform for cultural exchange and athletic excellence.

With Lagos’ rich infrastructure and vibrant energy, the event is poised to be a landmark moment for Nigerian fencing and the continent at large.
