The Kogi State Government has reiterated its steadfast commitment to addressing the security challenges facing the state, particularly in the wake of a recent surge in kidnappings and killings in the Western Senatorial District.
It called for unity, vigilance, and responsible communication from all stakeholders, warning against fear-mongering and the politicization of security issues.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government emphasized that significant, though quiet, progress is being made in the fight against criminal elements, especially kidnappers operating within the state. Fanwo stressed that these achievements are not accidental but the result of “well-coordinated strategies and deep institutional engagement.”
“These efforts are part of our broader plan to ensure the safety and well-being of every Kogite,” the statement noted, adding that the administration’s approach is deliberate and evidence-based, driven by credible intelligence and long-term planning.
Addressing recent security concerns, the government acknowledged the pain of families affected by the violence and expressed its sympathy. However, it warned that spreading misinformation or panic only plays into the hands of criminals. “Alarmist narratives embolden those who seek to destabilize our communities. We urge the media, opinion leaders, and political actors to act responsibly and collaborate with us rather than working against the collective interest,” Fanwo said.
The statement condemned attempts by certain politicians to exploit the situation for political gain, describing such actions as counterproductive and reckless. “Those who previously brought remedies with side effects worse than the disease itself should not raise false alarms when effective measures are being implemented,” the Commissioner remarked pointedly.
Providing insight into the evolving nature of the threat, the government explained that increased security operations in Nigeria’s North-East and North-West regions have led to a migration of criminal elements into North-Central states, including Kogi. This shift has contributed to the rising incidents of violence in the region.
Despite these emerging challenges, the government affirmed its continued investment in modern security infrastructure, enhanced intelligence gathering, and stronger community engagement. “Our goal is not to spread fear but to inspire hope. And we are not merely preaching hope—we are delivering it through concrete action,” Fanwo asserted.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, the statement confirmed, remains resolute in his commitment to security as a non-political priority. “We are taking full responsibility, not shifting blame,” the Commissioner emphasized, calling on political actors to focus on delivering tangible results rather than inciting panic. “Those who perform have no reason to fear re-election. Let performance, not propaganda, be the measure of leadership.”
The government also expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the National Security Adviser, the Service Chiefs, and grassroots security outfits such as the Vigilante Service and the Hunters Group for their steadfast support and collaboration.
The statement called for a united front against criminality: “Let us not amplify propaganda that benefits criminals. Let us stand together to overcome fear and build a more secure and hopeful future for Kogi State.”
