The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has been conferred with the prestigious chieftaincy title of “Ugosimba 1 of Enugu” — meaning “The Jewel or Eagle from Another Kingdom” — by the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council in recognition of her unwavering commitment to public service, humanitarian contributions, and love for the people of Enugu.
The title was officially bestowed during her two-day working visit to Enugu, with the ceremony taking place on Tuesday. Presiding over the event was the chairman of the Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council, His Royal Majesty Igwe Ikechukwu Asadu, who, along with other royal fathers, officers, and patrons of the council, participated in honouring the First Lady.
While conferring the title, HRM Asadu praised Mrs. Tinubu’s exemplary record in national service, particularly during her three-term tenure as a senator, as well as her commitment to humanitarian causes.
“Our First Lady served in the Senate for three consecutive terms and was also conferred with the Commander of the Order of the Niger. No one can say she was a silent voice in the parliament,” he said.
“What truly moves us is the humanitarian side of her character — her compassion for nurses, midwives, and the less privileged. I’m a nurse myself, so I understand the value of her support. From healing the sick to clothing the naked and feeding the hungry, these acts cannot go unappreciated. Only God can reward such kindness.”
Overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude, Senator Tinubu expressed heartfelt thanks to the government and people of Enugu State for their warm welcome and the symbolic honour.
She described the state as a peaceful haven, stating that she had felt a deep sense of inner peace since her arrival in the capital on Monday.
Speaking to the traditional rulers and attendees at the ceremony, she said:“This honour is deeply meaningful—not just to me, but to my husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and our entire family. I feel truly humbled and blessed to be recognised by a state as peaceful and gracious as Enugu.”
“Though I have received other titles in the past, this one is particularly special. I believe it is God-ordained. As you have honoured me today, Enugu State shall be remembered for good.”
She went on to assure the royal fathers and citizens of her continued dedication to serving humanity, adding:
“This moment will remain etched in my heart. It is not the end, but rather a new beginning—because truly, our tomorrow is here already.”
The chieftaincy title marks a significant moment in the First Lady’s journey as a national figure, further cementing her connection with the South-East region and reinforcing her advocacy for unity, compassion, and service across the nation.
