Isaac Fayose Criticizes ₦39 Billion Renovation of Abuja ICC, Labels It “Ego Construction” Amid Economic Hardship

Businessman and social commentator, Isaac Fayose, has openly criticized the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over the reported ₦39 billion allocated for the renovation of the Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC).

Fayose described the spending as a glaring case of misplaced priorities, especially during a time of severe economic hardship in Nigeria.

Fayose highlighted the stark contrast between the original cost of constructing the facility and the current renovation expenditure. He noted that the ICC was originally built in 1991 under the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida at a cost of just ₦240 million.

“It was a full, functional national monument built from scratch,” Fayose remarked. “Now in 2025, the same structure is being renovated—not rebuilt—for a staggering ₦39 billion.”

Describing the move as “ego construction,” Fayose questioned the rationale behind such a massive outlay for a facelift, rather than channeling the funds into more pressing national needs. “This isn’t about national development or preserving historical legacy,” he asserted. “This is about rewriting history with paint, bricks, and personal branding.”

He further criticized the administration for focusing on such projects while everyday Nigerians face escalating inflation, unemployment, and poverty.

“There’s a deeper issue here,” Fayose warned. “It’s not just about the money—it’s about what we value as a country. While citizens are struggling to meet basic needs, billions are being funneled into vanity projects meant to glorify individuals.”

The controversy intensified following an announcement by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who revealed that the Abuja International Conference Centre has now been renamed in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking during a formal event, Wike disclosed that the renaming was carried out with the full approval of the President. Henceforth, the facility will be known as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

Wike also emphasized the importance of maintaining the facility to high standards. As part of new administrative measures, he announced that all users—regardless of their status—will now be required to pay fees to access the venue. According to the minister, this decision aligns with a broader vision for sustainable and efficient management of public infrastructure.

However, the renaming and associated expenditure have sparked debate across the country, with critics like Fayose accusing the administration of prioritizing self-glorification over meaningful development.
