The city of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, is buzzing with excitement as it prepares to host the grand finale of the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, popularly known as the Prosperity Cup.
The much-anticipated event, scheduled for Friday, June 13, 2025, at the Samson Siasia Stadium, will see Governor Senator Douye Diri lead a host of dignitaries, including top football administrators and sports stakeholders, to witness the showdown.
According to a statement by Mr. Ono Akpe, Director General of the tournament, on behalf of the Central Organizing Committee, the Prosperity Cup has reached fever pitch. The third-place matches, set for Thursday, June 12, will kick off the final festivities.
In the men’s category, Bayelsa United Feeders FC of Yenagoa will face former champions Crusaders FC of Ekeremor, while the women’s third-place clash will feature Bayelsa Stars Queens FC against Bayelsa State College of Nursing Sciences (BYSCON) Queens at 1:00 p.m.
The grand finale on Friday will showcase a thrilling women’s final between Afini Ladies FC and Ezougha Soccer Academy, followed by the men’s final, where Eternal Grace Ministry (EGM) FC will battle Advance Dreams FA in a clash of titans, starting at 1:00 p.m. A pre-match meeting for the third-place teams and finalists is slated for Wednesday, June 11, to ensure a seamless event.
Governor Diri will serve as the chief host, with Deputy Governor Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo as the host. The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, will be the Special Guest of Honour, while Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, will chair the occasion.
Other notable attendees include Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, and Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye, Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). Representatives from the Nigeria National League (NNL) and Nigeria Nationwide League One, including Mr. George Aluo, Olushola Ogunnowo, Emmanuel Attah, and Danlami Alanana, are also expected.
The Prosperity Cup promises more than just football, with a raffle draw offering over half a million naira in prizes. The organizing committee has extended an invitation to sports lovers, fans, coaches, and the public to join in the celebration of grassroots talent.
