The highly anticipated inaugural West African Football Union (WAFU) A&B U-20 Boys Cup of Nations, initially scheduled for June 15 to 30, 2025, in Ghana, has been officially postponed, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced.
The decision, communicated in a letter to participating nations has left football stakeholders across West Africa awaiting further updates on the rescheduling of the prestigious youth tournament.
The GFA expressed regret over the postponement, stating, “We regret to announce that the WAFU A&B U-20 Boys Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Prampram from June 15-30, 2025, has been postponed. A new date for the tournament will be announced in due course.”
The association emphasized its commitment to ensuring optimal conditions for a successful event, urging all participating teams, officials, and stakeholders to remain patient and monitor official communication channels for updates on the revised schedule.
The tournament was set to feature sixteen national teams from WAFU Zones A and B, showcasing some of the region’s brightest young talents. The event was seen as a critical preparatory platform for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, slated to take place in Chile later in 2025.
Nigeria’s U-20 team, the Flying Eagles, under the guidance of head coach Aliyu Zubairu, had already begun intensive preparations, with the squad training in Abuja for the past week. Zubairu had previously highlighted the tournament’s importance as a key stepping stone for his team’s global ambitions.
While the GFA has not disclosed the specific reasons for the postponement football fans and stakeholders now await further announcements, hopeful that the rescheduled event will deliver the anticipated showcase of West Africa’s emerging football stars.
