As part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and in celebration of the recent Eid festivities, Vice President Kashim Shettima officially commissioned a new 1×7.5MVA 33kV/11kV distribution injection substation at Borno State University.

The project, executed by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), marks a significant milestone in the drive to enhance electricity reliability and access in northeastern Nigeria.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Sunday, was a pivotal event aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, which seeks to achieve universal access to electricity across the country through strategic infrastructure investments.

The Vice President, who also serves as Chairman of the NDPHC Board, emphasized that the substation is a concrete step toward bridging Nigeria’s electricity deficit, especially in underserved regions.

“This project is a tangible reflection of our commitment to reforming the power sector,” Vice President Shettima stated. “Through targeted interventions such as this, we are advancing President Tinubu’s vision of inclusive energy access, with a particular focus on supporting academic institutions and vulnerable communities.”

Constructed under the auspices of NDPHC’s Distribution Intervention Projects, the newly commissioned facility includes a 1×7.5MVA 33/11kV injection substation.

Additionally, it encompasses 3 kilometers of 33kV transmission lines, 2.5 kilometers of 11kV distribution lines, 2.5 kilometers of low-tension (LT) lines, and three 500KVA distribution transformers. These components collectively aim to improve electricity delivery to Borno State University and adjacent communities.

Speaking shortly after the event, the Managing Director and CEO of NDPHC, Engineer Jennifer Adighije, underlined the company’s central role in enhancing Nigeria’s entire electricity value chain—from generation to final distribution. She noted that this intervention is not just an infrastructural addition, but a strategic move toward sustainable and uninterrupted electricity supply.

“We are here today to commission and formally hand over this special intervention project to the distribution company that will be responsible for its operation,” Engr. Adighije said. “This substation is a demonstration of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the national grid, ensuring power generation is complemented by robust and effective distribution networks.”

She further reiterated NDPHC’s alignment with the federal government’s developmental objectives: “This initiative underscores our unwavering dedication to the Renewed Hope agenda by advancing energy inclusion and expanding electricity access to historically underserved areas, especially in Borno State.”

Adding to the technical perspective, NDPHC’s Executive Director of Networks, Engineer Bello Babayo, explained the operational benefits of the facility. He stated that the project enables the evacuation of 6 megawatts (MW) of electricity, thereby ensuring that the university and surrounding areas receive stable and efficient power.

“This infrastructure is crucial to balancing power generation with effective distribution,” Babayo remarked. “The project is instrumental in supporting both academic and commercial clusters within this locality, promoting socio-economic development through reliable energy.”

In a show of gratitude, the Managing Director of Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC), Abdulrahman Isa, expressed appreciation to both NDPHC and the federal government for their consistent support and developmental interventions. He acknowledged the strategic partnership with NDPHC, which he said continues to contribute meaningfully to the enhancement of Nigeria’s power infrastructure.

“NDPHC has remained a dependable development partner,” Isa stated. “Their contributions across generation, transmission, and distribution have greatly bolstered our capacity to deliver improved electricity services to our customers, including the university and its surrounding communities.”

Through this newly commissioned project, the federal government reaffirms its resolve to provide quality, reliable, and inclusive energy solutions that catalyze national progress and local transformation.
