The Oyo State Government has allayed the fears of the people of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government on the mountain disruption that occurred over the weekend.
On Saturday, June 7, residents of Igbeti, a town renowned for its rocky landscape, were gripped by fear after sections of the Iyamopo Rock began to crumble into smaller pieces, triggering a series of minor eruptions.
According to reports, the unusual activity occurred three times within a span of just ten minutes, closely resembling a similar incident that took place in April 2024. The unexpected disturbance sparked alarm among the townspeople, particularly those residing near the base of the mountain.
Eyewitnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud, sudden explosion originating from the mountain, commonly known as Iyamopo Hill, shortly before the rock began to fracture. Â
In a statement signed on Tuesday, June 10, by the Honourable Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, Government has started immediate evaluation of the situation and has therefore called residents to remain calm
According to the Commissioner, Experts from the Oyo State Solid Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA) under its Director General Mr. Biodun Oni have been dispatched to the site.
Â
The Information Commissioner said, “The disruption is a result of physical weathering on the rock caused by intense heat from February to May early this year, followed by sudden cooling. This expansion and contraction leads to cracking, peeling, and sheeting, resulting in minor tremors and rock movements as witnessed over the weekend”Â
The Commissioner added that Government is also working with experts from the university of Ibadan   to analyze the geological activity and provide solutions to mitigate future occurrences and also develop strategies to safeguarding lives and property in the affected area
He stated that residents can be assured that there is no cause for alarm, emphasizing, that no casualties have been recorded in the incident.
However, as a precautionary measure, the Commissioner urged individuals residing near the rock to evacuate temporarily until a permanent solution is reached.
He said that government remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens, adding that “We will continue to prioritize public safety and give updates as investigations progress.”
