Prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under the banner of the Concerned PDP Stakeholders, have issued a strong call to the party’s leadership to officially and unequivocally zone the 2027 Presidential ticket to the southern region of Nigeria.
This appeal was made public through a communiqué read by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, following a strategic meeting held in Abuja on Monday. According to the stakeholders, the party’s deep-seated crisis stems from a deliberate and consistent disregard for the PDP Constitution.
They particularly referenced violations of Sections 36(1)(a), (b), and (c), Sections 47(3) and (5), and Section 48(1)(i), along with the explicit ruling of the Supreme Court regarding the office of the National Secretary.
The group expressed grave concern over what they described as a dangerous trajectory for the party. “If immediate and decisive actions are not taken to curb the divisive, selfish, and desperate behaviors that have plagued the party—especially leading up to the 2023 elections—then the PDP is on an inevitable path to self-destruction,” the communiqué warned.
In a bid to restore internal harmony and rebuild public trust, the stakeholders unanimously resolved that the party must, in the spirit of fairness, equity, and adherence to its constitutional provisions, zone the 2027 Presidential candidacy to the South. They emphasized that this decision aligns with the principles of inclusion, federal character, and political justice, which the party has always championed.
Moreover, the stakeholders reaffirmed the legitimacy of Senator Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected National Secretary of the PDP, in accordance with a definitive judgment of the Supreme Court.
They insisted that all statutory responsibilities and duties assigned to the office of the National Secretary—including issuing notices for meetings of the National Convention, National Executive Committee (NEC), National Caucus, and National Working Committee (NWC)—must henceforth be performed solely by Senator Anyanwu.
They cautioned that any notices, actions, or official correspondences to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that are not issued by Senator Anyanwu are unconstitutional, null, void, and of no effect.
The communiqué also clarified that under the PDP Constitution, only a properly convened and legally recognized National Convention has the authority to remove Senator Anyanwu from office. Given his status as a legitimate member of the National Executive Council, any attempt to remove him through unofficial channels would be deemed invalid.
To ensure procedural integrity and legal compliance, the stakeholders demanded that both the Acting National Chairman and the National Secretary jointly issue a formal notice to INEC, accompanied by a comprehensive agenda for the next NEC meeting. They stressed that this is the only lawful and acceptable route to uphold internal democracy and due process.
Reiterating their unwavering commitment to the PDP, the group urged all party members to respect the rule of law, honor constitutional directives, and reject any schemes designed to destabilize the party.
They also pledged their support for the National Reconciliation Committee, chaired by former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, in its efforts to unite and strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
