The Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) has officially handed over a newly constructed maternity ward to the General Hospital in Ebute Metta. The initiative, a product of LSDPC’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) agenda, is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery for expectant mothers in the densely populated community.

The structure, ingeniously renovated from a portable cabin, now stands as a state-of-the-art maternity facility equipped to support quality maternal and child health services. At the official handover ceremony, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Irewole Ojo, expressed heartfelt appreciation to LSDPC for the intervention, describing it as a game-changer for both patients and healthcare workers.

According to Dr. Ojo, while the hospital has historically managed maternity services with existing infrastructure, the facilities were far from ideal in terms of accessibility, space, and functionality. She recounted how inspiration struck after observing the durability and aesthetics of LSDPC’s portal cabins near the Third Mainland Bridge. This, she said, prompted her to engage the Corporation for support.

“The professionalism, resource mobilisation, and technical support demonstrated by LSDPC have been exceptional,” Ojo remarked. “We now have a maternity unit that reflects the quality of care we aim to provide. We are optimistic that this collaboration signals the beginning of broader upgrades to our entire facility.”

Speaking at the event, Dr. Moyosore Adejumo, Commissioner III at the Lagos State Health Service Commission, lauded LSDPC’s timely contribution. She noted that maternal and child health remains a cornerstone of public health, and commended the Corporation for recognising the urgent need for infrastructural improvements.

“Access to quality maternal care is crucial in our fight to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates,” Dr. Adejumo stated. “Public-private partnerships like this are essential in transforming healthcare delivery across Lagos.”

The Managing Director of LSDPC, Mr. Ayodeji Joseph, underscored the Corporation’s dedication to social impact projects that align with state-wide development goals. He confirmed that LSDPC would not only construct the ward but also equip it with the necessary medical furnishings and installations to ensure operational efficiency.

“This project embodies LSDPC’s vision of community-focused development,” Joseph said. “We are deeply committed to enhancing lives through sustainable interventions, particularly in the health sector. Our collaboration with the General Hospital, Ebute Metta, is a step towards ensuring no woman is left without access to safe maternity care.”

Other dignitaries present included Dr. Adedeji Adejumo, Medical Director of the Mainland Hospital; Prince Adeniyi Aromolaran, Executive Director of Enterprise Services at LSDPC; and key officials from both the hospital and the Corporation.

This initiative comes at a critical time when Lagos State is intensifying efforts to expand healthcare access, particularly in underserved urban communities. Analysts have commended the project as a model for other public institutions to emulate, noting that innovation in the use of modular structures could be the key to bridging Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure gap.

In recent years, the Lagos State Government has repeatedly stressed the importance of improved maternal healthcare to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. The delivery of this maternity ward marks another milestone in achieving that objective.

Residents of Ebute Metta have also expressed excitement over the development, calling it a “lifeline” for the community’s women. For many, the proximity of a well-equipped maternity ward means shorter travel times, reduced risks during emergencies, and better outcomes for mothers and babies.

As the state continues to grapple with the challenge of overstretched health facilities, strategic interventions like this offer a ray of hope. For LSDPC, the project reinforces its legacy not just as a real estate development agency, but as a crucial player in shaping the social well-being of Lagosians.
