In a sweeping transformation effort of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc is spearheading several high-impact infrastructure projects aimed at modernizing transportation systems, enhancing public amenities, and stimulating urban development across Abuja.

According to Julius Berger’s Regional Manager, Oliver Berger, the company’s sustained collaboration with the Federal Government since 1980 has shaped the capital’s development trajectory. From highways to hospitals, the construction firm is actively executing a portfolio of projects that underscore its commitment to quality, efficiency, and innovation in infrastructure delivery.

“We are reshaping the infrastructural landscape in the Federal Capital Territory. Right from Julius Berger’s entrance into Abuja in 1980, we have inspired development through partnership with the Federal Government on large-scale development. Now, we are taking infrastructural development to the next level,” said Berger.

The company is currently undertaking and completing major developments including:

Abuja-Kubwa Expressway

Abuja International Airport Runway

Airport Road Interchange

Arterial Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way)

Central Bank of Nigeria building

International Conference Centre rehabilitation

Asokoro Hillside Multispecialty Hospital

Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) headquarters

Central Roads B6/B12

The official residence of the Vice President

Emergency rehabilitation of the FCT Minister’s residence

Work on Arterial Road N5, a crucial 4.4km route designed to enhance urban mobility, is in full swing. The road includes a river bridge, multiple culverts, and key interchanges such as the N3/N30 junction—all of which are being delivered to world-class standards.

Julius Berger’s involvement in the construction of the NUPRC headquarters, designed by Artec Practice Limited, exemplifies its technical prowess in creating architecturally significant and environmentally efficient buildings. The building’s sun-shielding façade and smart systems are benchmarks for modern public infrastructure.

“From its sun-shielding façade to cutting-edge building systems, every detail is crafted to set new standards in functionality and design,” Oliver Berger noted.

Additionally, Julius Berger has played a critical role in addressing road safety and urban mobility challenges. Projects like the Airport Road Interchange eliminated hazardous U-turns and significantly reduced congestion, while the Jabi Lake Bridge and Nyanya-Karu flyover have eased traffic flows into the heart of Abuja.

Beyond intra-city projects, Julius Berger has contributed to broader national connectivity through the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport access road, facilitating better logistics and commuting across state borders. These projects are part of a larger strategy to support Nigeria’s economic diversification through efficient infrastructure.

Julius Berger’s reach extends to public service delivery infrastructure. From constructing government buildings to modern educational and healthcare facilities, the company has positioned itself as a vital player in Abuja’s civic development.

Among its notable contributions are iconic national landmarks like the Nigerian National Mosque and the National Christian Centre, which reflect a harmonious blend of aesthetic excellence and structural integrity.

As Abuja’s population continues to grow rapidly, the demand for resilient, scalable, and sustainable infrastructure becomes paramount. Julius Berger’s ongoing projects not only aim to meet current needs but are designed to future-proof the capital city through modern engineering solutions.

According to urban development analysts, the strategic intervention by Julius Berger positions Abuja to evolve into a more livable, economically vibrant, and globally competitive capital city.

With its unmatched track record in engineering excellence, Julius Berger’s role in Abuja’s infrastructure revolution underlines the importance of private sector expertise in national development.
