The 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has officially announced the cancellation of all planned Sallah Durbar activities across the Emirate, citing concerns over security and public safety.
This development was disclosed during a press briefing held at the Kofar Kudu palace, where the Emir addressed journalists and provided insight into the decision. According to the monarch, the move came after a series of consultations and deliberations with the Kano State Government.
“Following my discussions with government officials, I was presented with substantial evidence indicating plans by certain elements to exploit the Durbar festivities to incite unrest and disrupt the peace within the state,” the Emir explained.
He added that, in light of this intelligence and in the interest of preserving harmony, the Emirate Council had resolved to suspend the traditional Sallah celebrations. “After receiving this advice, the Emirate Council has decided to cancel all Sallah Durbar activities,” Sanusi said.
To ensure full compliance, the Emir directed all district heads, ward leaders, and village heads under the Kano Emirate to remain within their respective jurisdictions and avoid any actions that could lead to disorder. “We are instructing all our traditional leaders to stay put in their domains to avoid any unforeseen situations,” he stated.
This decision aligns with the earlier stance of the joint security forces in Kano, who on Tuesday reaffirmed that the existing ban on all forms of Sallah Durbar celebrations remains active and enforceable.
By prioritizing the safety of residents and the stability of the state, Emir Sanusi II’s directive underscores the need for vigilance and collective responsibility during sensitive periods.
IREPORT247NEWS reported the tragic event that happened in Kano State on March 30, 2025, during the Sallah celebration.
Emir Sanusi was officially asked by the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to be questioned in connection with the violence that occurred during the Eid-el-Fitr procession that took place in Kano.
This violence resulted in the murder of a local vigilante member. The invitation came after a fatal incident that took place on the day of Eid, while the Emir’s entourage was making their way from the Eid prayer field to the palace in a traditional parade.
A statement that was released by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that instead, operatives of the Force Intelligence Department (FID) have been directed to proceed to Kano in order to get Alhaji Sanusi’s testimony. This directive was made on the directives of the Inspector General of Police.
Part of the statement read, “It was mutually agreed that no Durbar Festival would be held to preserve peace and public safety and none of the disputed emirs will ride on horse on Sallah day.
“Despite this agreement, Alhaji Aminu Sanusi who had attended the Eid Prayers in his car, decided to mount a horse in a procession after Eid Prayers on Sallah Day, accompanied by local vigilantes.
“This triggered a confrontation by youths in the community, leading to the tragic death of one Usman Sagiru, and leaving several others injured.
“A situation which the Force had earlier warned against and intended to avert by the emissaries sent earlier to both Alhaji Sanusi and Alhaji Ado Bayero.”
