The Federal High Court Mourns Justice Daniel Dantsoho Abutu

The Federal High Court of Nigeria announces with profound sadness the passing of its esteemed former Chief Judge, the Honorable Justice Daniel Dantsoho Abutu.

Justice Abutu passed away on June 3, 2025, at the age of 79, following a brief illness. Born on March 15, 1946, he hailed from Kogi State.

Through its spokesperson, Dr. Catherine Oby Christopher, the Federal High Court expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a distinguished jurist whose career was marked by unwavering dedication to justice and exemplary administrative leadership.

Justice Abutu’s tenure as Chief Judge was characterized by his commitment to upholding the rule of law and fostering excellence within the judiciary.

During his tenure as Chief Judge, Justice Abutu was known for his unwavering commitment to justice and administrative excellence. His leadership left a lasting legacy on Nigeria’s legal system.

Justice Abutu presided over several high-profile cases, including the conviction of Cecilia Ibru, former Managing Director of Oceanic Bank International, who was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment and ordered to forfeit N191 billion worth of assets to the Federal Government.

In recognition of his exemplary service, Justice Abutu was conferred with the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) award in 2010.  

His impactful leadership and invaluable contributions have left an enduring legacy on both the Judiciary and the wider legal community in Nigeria. The Federal High Court extends its heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues, friends, and all those whose lives he touched through his remarkable service.
