President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to reforming and modernizing the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and other security agencies across the country.

He emphasized that effective policing in the 21st century hinges on access to modern tools, data-driven strategies, and collaborative partnerships with local communities.

Delivering the president’s message at the second edition of the Nigeria Police Award and Commendation Ceremony in Abuja, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who represented Tinubu at the event, underscored the administration’s ongoing efforts to invest in the capacity and welfare of the police force.

“My administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the transformation of the Nigeria Police Force and, indeed, other security agencies,” Tinubu stated. “We recognize that modern policing is rooted in continuous training, advanced equipment, and an intelligence-led approach.

We will sustain investments in cutting-edge technology, professional development programs, and welfare initiatives aimed at enhancing the effectiveness and morale of our security personnel.”

While pledging continued government support, President Tinubu issued a clear and stern message to police officers across the nation: uphold the integrity of your mandate.

“To every officer, irrespective of your rank or assignment, I remind you that the power entrusted to you is not a license for intimidation, but a solemn duty to protect. It must never be used for abuse but for service to our beloved country,” he said.

He called on the police to embody professionalism, transparency, and ethical conduct, urging them to reject corruption and all forms of misconduct. Tinubu praised the award recipients, stating, “You have made your families and the nation proud. Let this recognition propel you toward greater excellence. May your actions inspire others within the Force to embrace discipline, dedication, and integrity.”

Describing the event as more than a celebration, Tinubu noted it also served as a moment of reflection and renewed commitment to the values the police must uphold in a democratic society.

In a poignant moment during the ceremony, Senate President Akpabio announced a personal donation of ₦5 million to the family of the late Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Aniedi Cecilia Udoh, who passed away in May 2024 while in active service. Udoh, a native of Akwa Ibom State, served as the Area Commander in Ahoada, Rivers State, and was posthumously honored as the Community Policing Advocate of the Year.

Akpabio also reflected on his personal and institutional support for law enforcement over the years. As former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, he said he donated over 350 patrol vehicles, four armored personnel carriers, and marine patrol platforms, and built a Mobile Police (MOPOL) base as well as a Police Secondary School—all at no cost to the Force.

“As Senate President, I have facilitated the construction of 10 new police stations in my senatorial district alone,” he noted. “I am not tired of supporting the police. On behalf of the National Assembly, I pledge our full commitment to ensuring that the police receive adequate funding and support to carry out their mandate.”

In his welcome address, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, echoed the administration’s reform stance, describing the police transformation agenda as a daily, long-term commitment.

“The transformation of the Nigeria Police Force is not a catchphrase—it is our creed,” Egbetokun said. “This event is not simply about rewarding excellence, but about establishing a legacy of service. Policing is not transactional; it is transformational.”

He reaffirmed that the police’s most vital ally in promoting justice and security remains the Nigerian public, and urged for deeper collaboration in the pursuit of national peace and stability.
