The National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Nigerian boxing icon Obisia “Golden Gloves” Nwakpa, describing his death as an irreplaceable loss to the nation’s sports community. Nwakpa, a revered figure in Nigerian boxing, passed away on Tuesday, with his family confirming the news on Wednesday.

The NSC paid glowing tributes to Nwakpa, celebrating his remarkable contributions to Nigerian sports as both an athlete and a coach. Known for his dominance in the lightweight division during the 1970s and 1980s, Nwakpa’s career was marked by dedication, patriotism, and discipline.

His impressive record of 23 wins and 6 losses in 29 professional fights cemented his legacy as one of Nigeria’s finest boxers. Nwakpa represented Nigeria at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics, the 1973 All Africa Games, and the 1974 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand, showcasing the resilient Nigerian spirit on the global stage.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, described Nwakpa as a true legend whose life exemplified the qualities of a top athlete. “Obisia Nwakpa represents every example any top athlete should emulate – from his dedication, patriotism, and discipline during his days in the ring,” Dikko said.

Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC and a passionate boxing enthusiast, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing Nwakpa’s enduring impact. “Some of the achievements Nigeria is enjoying in boxing today are a result of the foundations legends like Obisia Nwakpa laid in the past,” Olopade said. “His legacies will forever be remembered.” He also extended the NSC’s condolences and pledged full support to Nwakpa’s family during this difficult time.

Beyond his achievements in the ring, Nwakpa served as a national boxing coach for Team Nigeria at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, further solidifying his influence on the sport. His contributions as a coach helped shape the next generation of Nigerian boxers, leaving an indelible mark on the pugilist sport.

The NSC has committed to working closely with Nwakpa’s family to provide assistance and honor his legacy. As Nigeria mourns the loss of this sporting giant, the nation celebrates a life dedicated to excellence, patriotism, and the growth of boxing.
