In a landmark development for Nigeria’s energy sector, the Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, officially inaugurated the country’s first Liquefied to Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) hub located in Yola, Adamawa State, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025. This pioneering project, spearheaded by Greenville LNG, represents a significant milestone in advancing the Federal Government’s ambitious ‘Decade of Gas’ agenda and is set to catalyze economic growth and energy accessibility in the North-East region.

The strategic establishment of this LCNG facility in Yola is a bold step towards bridging the long-standing infrastructural and energy deficits that have hampered economic potential in the North-East. Minister Ekpo emphasized the symbolic and practical importance of the project in his address, highlighting the region’s renewed opportunity for industrial and social development.

“The facility in Yola is more than just an energy plant; it is a beacon of hope and opportunity not just for Adamawa State, but for the entire North-East region. For too long, infrastructural challenges have limited this area’s potential, but now, the benefits of Nigeria’s vast natural gas resources can reach every corner of our country,” Ekpo said.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration has prioritized the harnessing of Nigeria’s abundant natural gas reserves to drive industrialization and economic transformation. The LCNG model exemplifies this vision by providing an integrated solution that powers vehicles and industrial equipment through cleaner and more cost-effective alternatives to traditional fuels like petrol and diesel.

“The LCNG plant in Adamawa demonstrates the Federal Government’s commitment to advancing energy security and sustainability through innovative gas utilization,” Ekpo added. “This project not only offers cleaner energy but also fosters economic inclusivity by expanding access to natural gas in underserved regions.”

Natural gas, particularly when converted to compressed natural gas (CNG), is recognized globally for its environmental benefits. It emits fewer pollutants compared to conventional fossil fuels, contributing to improved air quality and a reduction in greenhouse gases. Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, represented by his deputy, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, praised the project’s alignment with the state’s climate action goals.

“Our state has felt the impact of climate change, and we support every initiative aimed at protecting the environment and promoting healthy living. The introduction of this LCNG plant reflects our shared commitment to cleaner, affordable energy,” Prof. Farauta said.

The Greenville LNG Chairman, Mr. Eddy Van Den Broeke, revealed that the company plans to invest over $1 billion in Nigeria’s gas sector, with intentions to replicate similar LCNG projects in other states. He called for continued collaboration with federal and state authorities to scale up these initiatives, reinforcing the sector’s role in Nigeria’s broader economic development.

Minister Ekpo also acknowledged the crucial role of the Adamawa State government and local communities in facilitating the project, citing the provision of land and conducive construction environments as key factors in the plant’s successful establishment.

The Minister urged other investors and gas developers to seize the opportunity to expand LCNG infrastructure across Nigeria, especially in regions with limited access to reliable and affordable energy sources.

The inauguration of the first LCNG plant in Nigeria’s North-East signals a transformative moment in the country’s energy landscape. As Nigeria advances its ‘Decade of Gas’ vision, projects like the Yola LCNG hub showcase the power of public-private partnerships to deliver sustainable, clean, and inclusive energy solutions. With environmental benefits, economic growth potential, and improved energy access at the forefront, the initiative is set to become a model for replication nationwide.
