The Federal Government has commenced preparations for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration through the inauguration of a high-level inter-ministerial committee. This committee is tasked with designing, coordinating, and overseeing the national activities that will mark the event.

Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has been appointed as the chairman of this committee. However, during the inauguration ceremony, he was represented by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu.

Speaking on behalf of Senator Akume, Bagudu emphasized the significance of Democracy Day as a moment not only for solemn reflection but also for the celebration of democratic progress.

According to him, the day provides a critical platform for the government to present its accomplishments to the citizens and to renew its pledge to uphold democratic values, transparency, and participatory governance. He underscored that Democracy Day is not merely symbolic but an active expression of the country’s democratic journey and collective aspirations.

In his remarks, Bagudu called upon members of the committee to operate in harmony with the strategic direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. He urged them to ensure that the planned activities are aligned with the broader objectives of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The successful execution of this national event, he noted, would reflect not just the government’s readiness to engage with the public but also its commitment to inclusive national development and democratic consolidation.

A statement issued by Segun Imohiosen, the Director of Information at the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, provided details of the proposed schedule of events.

The celebration will span several days and feature a range of activities involving different segments of society. These include public engagements such as religious services, youth-focused programs, a national lecture, a presidential broadcast, and a ceremonial parade—all carefully designed to resonate with the spirit of democracy and national unity.

The statement further identified several prominent figures who will serve as members of the inter-ministerial committee. These include top officials from key ministries and federal agencies, such as the Ministers of Finance, Information, Foreign Affairs, the Federal Capital Territory, and Interior.

Also serving on the committee are senior security and policy officials, including the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, and military representatives.

In addition, several permanent secretaries from various ministries and offices will participate, with Engr. Nadungu Gagare, the Permanent Secretary of the Political and Economic Affairs Office in the OSGF, designated as both a member and the secretary of the committee.

Altogether, the formation of this committee marks the beginning of detailed planning for the 2025 Democracy Day. The government aims to deliver a celebration that not only honors Nigeria’s democratic journey but also strengthens the public’s trust in the nation’s leadership and institutions.
