British singer Jessie J has publicly disclosed her diagnosis with early-stage breast cancer. In a heartfelt video posted on Instagram, the 37-year-old star shared the news, emphasizing that the cancer was caught early. Jessie J, whose real name is Jessica Ellen Cornish, explained that she had been undergoing various tests and will soon undergo surgery.
“I was diagnosed with early breast cancer,” she revealed. “I’m highlighting the word early. Cancer sucks in any form, but I’m holding on to the word early.” Despite her upcoming performance at the Summertime Ball on June 15, Jessie J announced that she will take some time off after the event for her surgery. “I am going to disappear for a bit after Summertime Ball to have my surgery. And I will come back with massive tits and more music,” she said with her characteristic optimism.
Jessie J decided to share her diagnosis publicly, motivated by her desire to be open and to potentially help others. “I just wanted to be open and share it. One because selfishly I do not talk about it enough – I’m not processing it because I’m working so hard,” she explained. She also acknowledged the support she has received in the past when sharing personal struggles, stating, “I also know how much sharing in the past has helped me with other people giving me their love and support and also their own stories.”
The singer expressed her empathy for others going through similar or worse experiences, saying, “It breaks my heart that so many people are going through so much. Similar and worse – that’s the bit that kills me.” In the caption accompanying the video, Jessie J reflected on the diagnosis, noting that it has given her “the most incredible perspective.” However, she also admitted to needing support, saying, “Your girl needs a hug.”
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breast cancer is a significant global health issue, with 2.3 million women diagnosed and 670,000 deaths attributed to the disease in 2022. The WHO emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis, as it increases the effectiveness of treatment.
This is not Jessie J’s first time sharing her health struggles publicly. In 2021, she posted about a pregnancy loss. The singer, who has a 2-year-old son with basketball player Chanan Colman, continues to inspire her followers with her openness and resilience.
